We strongly believe we made something unique.

In this inaugural issue of XNOO, our contributors embrace fantasy at its roots, and look at a future of comics that might still very well still be. We remember the days of the original Métal Hurlant with fondness and a bit of nostalgia. The maelström of creativity of the early 80s certainly shaped our creative brains, and we wanted to recapture this time when everything was possible. XNOO was made following a burst of inspiration, during a full year spent in a sort of DIY punk frenesy. We’ve assembled an eclectic mix of pen wizards: some are actual comix pros, other make a living as illustrators, and others are promising new practicians of the ink wand. Like ours, their imaginations are steeped in weird sword & sorcery and unconventional fantasy.

Slay adventurers. Collect your paycheck. Spend it all on a date with that kobold cutie from Accounting. In Dungeon, Inc. you work for a corporation secretly running the largest megadungeon in the land. Each mission sends your team into a dungeon level, generally to ‘deal with the clients’. The job is trickier than it sounds. Not only are adventurers little inclined to give up their stuff and quietly die, but some must escape with enough loot to spread the Dungeon’s legend and attract more marks. After each mission, you get to experience office life. Relax, spend your disposable income (or the loot you ‘forgot’ to hand over), network, make enemies, and perhaps investigate the dark dealings of upper management. You’re buying two books!

It contains everything you need for a complete campaign: rules for character creation, fast and battlemap-free combat, powerful but life-draining magic, etc. The company is explained in enough detail to help the Discussion Moderator and players fill in the blanks. Many random tables provide inspiration for clients (adventurers), colleagues (monsters), dungeon denizens (also monsters), office rumours and interactions, mission complications… Chapters devoted to mission creation and campaign modes assist planner DMs as well as the seat-of-your-pants improv types.

The city of Olgendsongrad has become rich and fat capturing, breeding, and butchering these scourges on the world that are Chaotic dragons. When a workers’ union takes over its main production facility to demand the freedom of all dragons, the city’s economy grinds to a halt. The processing plant is a former prison, itself built inside an old fortress. Its magical defences are making it impossible for the city’s competing militias to barge in without endangering the hostages’ lives, as valuable meat grinding equipment, and valued dragon associates. Enter the player characters… The Plant’s Base union is in control of most of the facility, but strange things are happening with the plant’s automaton workers, the automated conveyor belt and grinding machine, and the meat-addicted pigeons that plague the roofs. Worse even, something is haunting the waste canals of the sub-level below where the dragon associates are chained. The adventure is a dynamic dungeon of about 45 areas with a 40-entry encounters/events/environment table, as well as a countdown procedure. Players will have to be quick to achieve their goals (we provide a choice of them), grab some valuable tins of Dragonmeat™, and get out before the siege ends in a bloodbath. As Olgendsongrad is a city with many peculiarities, we have included an introduction and a map, as well as a two-page adventure to get your players in the swing of things. A literal sandbox for 2nd to 5th level characters, this module lets the players explore a dried out sea, making friends and enemies among its various factions. A lot is happening in the dead Sea of Yarth: the proud Yodin nomads are at odds over border crossings with the Shining Sultan’s legions, a mysterious wizard has taken over an old lighthouse, desperate locals have formed a cult to worship Lady Drybones, the dragon that killed the sea. Sooner or later, the characters will face the droughtwyrm, whether on behalf of a powerful patron, to appropriate her sizable hoard, or to benevolently help the downtrodden survivors of the Desolation. They will then have to fight and negotiate their way into the rusted experimental vessel Lady Drybones has claimed as her seat of power, as well as the barracks for her mercenary army of scorpion-folk and a makeshift temple for her cultists. Sweetwater, a town to resupply from, hire help in, and gather rumours; 5 factions and 2 rival adventuring parties woven in the location and encounter tables; 25 hexes with 18 detailed locations, including 3 small dungeons.
